Solitary Fibrous Tumor (SFT) is an exceptionally rare type of connective tissue tumor that can arise in almost any part of the body. While it is most frequently found in the pleura (the lining around the lungs) or the meninges (the lining of the brain), it can also occur in the abdomen, pelvis, or other soft tissues. For many decades, this condition was known by different names—most notably hemangiopericytoma—but modern medical science has unified these diagnoses under the umbrella of SFT. We now understand that these tumors are driven by a very specific genetic event: a fusion between the NAB2 and STAT6 genes. This genetic “fingerprint” is a highly useful marker that helps doctors confirm the diagnosis, though it is always interpreted alongside a specialist’s review of the tumor’s physical appearance under the microscope [1].
The behavior of an SFT can be highly unpredictable, meaning it cannot be simply labeled as “benign” or “malignant” by a quick look. Instead, specialists use advanced risk-stratification models, such as the Demicco model, to look at a combination of four specific factors: your age, the tumor’s size, its mitotic count (how fast cells divide), and the presence of necrosis (dead tissue). This assessment is vital because it helps your care team estimate the likelihood of the tumor returning or spreading to other organs at a population level, allowing them to tailor a treatment and monitoring plan specifically for you [2].
The primary treatment for most localized tumors is surgical removal, with the goal of achieving “clear margins” to ensure no tumor cells are left behind.
